Funny pic here for what’s a serious subject, but I had to go with something high school-related since no photos of the graffiti in question have been released.
I went to Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD. After graduating, I went to Wisconsin for college and stayed in Madison for a total of 18 years until I moved !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! last spring.
Rockville is the county seat of Montgomery County, which is an incredibly diverse suburb directly north and west of DC. According to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , Rockville is the 9th most-diverse city in the country, and 3 other cities in Montgomery County are in the top 10.
Naturally, Richard Montgomery’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! as the area in general. The school is 29.5% white, 24.7% Asian, 24.3% Hispanic, and 17.5% black, among others. While that report doesn’t break out students by religion, there’s a large Jewish population, including myself.
That diversity is one of the things I absolutely love about Rockville, and the DC area in general. It’s a Very Good Thing®. Here in Montgomery County, we’re proud as hell of this diversity. I mean, I can walk from my house to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and at my gym, as a white dude, I’m often in the minority.
My wife, who is from Wisconsin, but has lived in places like the Berkshires in Massachusetts, St. Paul, and Tucson, had only visited the DC area with me before we moved here. But in our very first week living here, she said something to me like, “I went to the store and it was incredible, literally every kind of person was there, I love it!” I was like, “yup, welcome to Rockville.”
This is all to say, it ain’t no fucking MAGA country around here.
The other day, I opened up Chrome on my phone, and I saw a link to an article with the headline: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . There actually is a Rockville High School, which is the next one over from RM. But when I opened the article, lo and behold they were talking about RM. (The next day they updated the headline to specify it was RM, which is a high school in Rockville, but not the Rockville High School. Whoops.)
I have to admit, seeing stuff like this happen around the country is always disappointing, but I felt a little bit shocked when it happened at RM. In this community, one of the most diverse in the country and one that LIKES IT THAT WAY.
Apparently, this was the second racist incident at the school in a month. The other one, was someone took red plastic cups that had been stuck in a fence to spell out SENIORS, and rearranged them to say the N-word.
Seriously.
Oh, and two years ago on Valentine’s Day, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! happened:
On the morning of Feb. 14, a school employee walked into a second-floor special education lab and found that someone had covered the white board with racially charged language. The messages said “Trump power,” “Slayer,” “we rule,” “we are the best,” “all white,” “white power” and “no n***rs” with the word “blacks” written underneath, Cpl. Rick Halverson of the Rockville police said Friday. The n-word was misspelled.
Now I know high school kids are bastards in general, but it’s really hard to not draw correlations between certain politicians’ public statements, and the rise of certain other people’s racist-ass bullshit behavior.
But I’m not getting into that, because more than anything else, I’m just disappointed .
Fuck these fuckers. They picked the wrong town. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to console myself with some !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I typically keep my opinion on politics to myself but I’ll bite today. I really think that most of these “racist” teen incidents are less about racist teens, and more about complete moron teens trying to get a rise out of people. People get fired up that MAGA hats are the worst things ever, teens that don’t follow politics wear MAGA hats to seem cool, etc.

People do some crazy shit. I was involved in a claim where the claimant alleged that he had been fired in retaliation for speaking out against the racist actions he had suffered.
Nooses in his locker, office, truck. A styrofoam cups turned into a little effigy of a Klansman.
And he had photos! It was really sad. This happened in either Arizona or California... Can't remember

Yeah, not a place I would expect that. Had my family not moved I would have gone to Wootton, just on the other side of 270 from RM. Potomac is probably not as ethnically diverse as Rockville, but yeah, still definitely not anywhere swastikas would be welcome.

Wouldn’t bother me too much, I’m pretty pro- urban- density, but lots of people want their quarter-acre of the post-war American dream. FWIW, Rockville is considerably more built-up than Towson, though not to the level of DC suburbs like Bethesda or Silver Spring, which are mini-cities of their own.

Wootton is also in Rockville, although its district draws from more of the North Potomac area and the northwest corner of Rockville that feels more like Potomac.
(My parents house is west of 270, in the Rockville city limits, but the the Potomac zip code. It’s actually a bit closer to Wootton than RM but with the way the districts are drawn I ended up at RM.)

Most suburbs used to be farms! It’s part of the reason farming has been relocated to sub-optimal locations. See all the green circles below ? They are fields with center-pivot irrigation. They are what make this area, the panhandle of Texas, one of the most productive agricultural areas in the state.
See all the brown? That’s the natural state - arid grasslands and desert. It has no business being used for farming. They are pulling water from a deep aquifer which is recharged at the Rocky Mountains.
The most productive areas in the state in the ‘20s and ‘30s were the Blackland Prarie around Dallas and the Rio Grande Valley. The latter lost production value as the Rio Grande dried up due to upstream agriculture use. The former was converted to suburbs .

Possible they’ve changed the distri cting , but when I was there, it was drawing mainly Potomac kids, though I may also be biased since I was at Cabin John for middle school, which was all Potomac kids. I image Frost was more mixed, but my understanding was that it was primarily North Potomac there .

Cabin John feeds into Churchill which is where most of Potomac goes. Wootton is very much North Potomac. Walter Johnson is North Bethesda, and Bethesda is Whitman and BCC. Here are the district maps, which as far as I know have been pretty consistent.
The main changes since I was a kid in the 90s are the addition of Northwest HS and the merging of Kennedy, Wheaton, Einstein, etc into the Downcounty Consortium.

I...don’t remember. It wasn’t full sized, I think it was 16" wheels that started with training wheels which I couldn’t wait to take off . But it was a Haro and I definitely remember the triangle Rockville BMX logo with the splat on it.

Hmm, Cabin John was a (roughly) a 50/50 split between Wootton and Churchill when I was there, though I wouldn’t be surprised if that has changed, given that it was obviously a suboptimal arrangement, and that they tore down and rebuilt Cabin John a decade ago, which would have messed up the feeder system anyway. It does say “Winston Churchill and Thomas S. Wootton Clusters” though, so maybe that split is still happening?
Also, your map seems to put Hoover in weird place, I was wondering if they moved it, a la Blair, but it looks like someone just misplaced the marker.

This bothers me greatly. I’ll clown on Maryland and pretend VA is better (we are a Commonwealth, after all), but I’m not going to pretend that couldn’t happen in Vienna at Madison. And my oldest is hitting public school next year. We have a similar mix in our neighborhood and at their current daycare, but with more Indian people (with delicious samosas).
This would piss me off as a decent human being in isolation but my wife is Jewish, and that means my kids are too. And pissed off and scared for my wife and kids is different for me than pissed off at the world in general.

That’s not an official map. MCPS has a tool on their website where you can enter your address to find your school but it was pretty difficult for me to find an actual map.
Actually I forgot the split thing with Cabin John, that’s still there. I think it’s Stone Mill Elementary ends up at Wootton and Cold Spring goes to Churchill. Although Cabin John is within the boundary of the Churchill district.
My parents neighborhood started out going to Beall Elementary but is within walking distance of Ritchie Park and switched there after I finished elementary school. I went to the gifted program at Cold Spring in 4th & 5th grade along with a couple of other kids from my neighborhood. To get there, we’d ride our bikes to to Ritchie Park and hop a short bus to Cold Spring.
There were some girls in the neighborhood who were safety patrols at Ritchie Park. Apparently there was a patrol rule where you’re supposed to only ride your bikes in the street, so these girls would lock hands and skip in front of us singing “DON’T RIDE YOUR BIKES ON THE SIDEWALK!” but that never really worked out for them because we were on bikes and they couldn’t catch us. We’d be like, “OUR PARENTS TOLD US TO RIDE ON THE SIDEWALK AND WE DON’T EVEN GO TO YOUR SCHOOL ANYWAY SO YOU CAN’T GET US IN TROUBLE !”
Of course, we all ended up at Julis West MS.

I was at Cold Spring. And yeah, we passed Churchill (and Hoover, since they are in the same place) on the way to get to Cabin John. There was at least one other elementary school feeding in that did go to Churchill, but I can’t think what it was right now.
When I was in middle school I did have a Cold Spring patrol (so like a 5th grader or something ) tear my shirt trying to physically keep me from crossing the street without his permission (there was nothing coming of course). Not a great decision on his part.

Yes, the internet allows people with shitty ideas to connect with each other. But that doesn’t mean it’s the only reason for the rise of shitty ideas.
The fact is the current occupant of the white house says many things that are openly racist, or race-baiting, or dog whistles to racists, or supportive of groups with white supremacist views . Hate crimes have also gone up every year of his tenure.
Now obviously, correlation doesn’t mean causation, but at the same time, waving it all away as a result of the internet is short-sighted, and dare I say, ignorant.

Certainly more so than Rockville, but there is plenty of racial diversity (granted more due to foreign embassy personnel than immigrants, African Americans, or Hispanics ). It does have a very large Jewish population which is certainly relevant to this discussion.

Obviously there’s more to countries and cultures than food but I love food and many other countries’ cuisine has lots more veggie options for me than MURRICAN stuff so I have a deep appreciation of their cultures, through food, among other avenues.
(Speaking of the subcontinent, some of my cousins are half-Jewish /half-Pakistani. Interesting combo there. And my business partner is also Pakistani. And yes I know Pakistan is not India.)
